RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
