EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
