A shadow economy for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Express Worries
However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Enforcement
Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some content creators attempt to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.
Platform Response and Material Removal
Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.
Online Marketplace Activities
Research also found groups with up to nine thousand members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.
Within moments of joining one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged testing documentation. None inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.
Item Details and Pricing
Inside these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, sellers give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively monitored dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using online platforms. But fake injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has already encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
