The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
